Sarah's POV

The weight of Kim's emotions was a tangible thing, a heavy cloak draped over her shoulders that I could practically see. The knowledge tugged at a thread of guilt within me. After all, I knew – with a certainty born from that strange blind date phone call – that Alexis was in love with Kim. The love was a spark in her eyes, a yearning in her voice. And Kim, oh Kim, mirrored that love with a devotion that shone even through her heartbreak. And even I knew that this was the boundary. The boundary I could no longer step further. The love that Alexis and Kim had shown… was calling for my retreat.

But there was another layer to this tangled mess, a bitter truth that gnawed at the edges of my manipulative actions — Alexis's father. I knew, with a sickening certainty, that this powerful man wouldn't tolerate this kind of love. He'd orchestrate a marriage, a gilded cage for Alexis, a business transaction disguised as a union. Selling his daughter for profit and power, leaving hearts like Kim's — shattered in the process.

Confession gnawed at me. My cruel words at the club, the desperate attempt to provoke Alexis… it all boiled down to a twisted test. Could she stand strong for Kim, or would she crumble under the pressure? The answer lay heavy in my stomach – Kim would be the one hurt.

So, I sent the text, a single sentence laced with a desperate hope. "Girl, can we talk? Where are you?"

The reply pinged back, sharp and laced with a defensiveness I understood all too well. "We can talk at DM suites near the streetlights. But I'm with Cedric."

A bitter laugh escaped my lips. "Are you really going to stand by marrying Dric instead of your love for Kim? Are you really that weak, Alexis?"

The next message held a tremor of something like defeat. "Dric is leaving now. Let's talk. I guess we need to."

I didn't tell Kim about Alexis meeting Cedric at the very place she lived. The sting of that detail would only deepen the wound in Kim's heart. The woman already carried enough pain, a tapestry woven from my impulsive actions and Alexis's forced choices. And as I looked into Kim's eyes, I vowed to myself – no, I wouldn't add another stitch to that painful masterpiece.

Kim’s Car - 7:00 PM

"Head for DM Suites, Kim. Looks like Alexis is waiting in the parking lot," I said, my voice tight with a knot of dread tightening in my gut.

"Okay," Kim replied, "Thanks, Sarah," a hollow echo in the enclosed space of the car. The silence stretched, thick and heavy, with unspoken words and swirling emotions hanging heavy in the air. We arrived at the DM suites parking lot, the familiar concrete landscape a stark contrast to the storm brewing inside both of us.

I gestured to unbuckle my seatbelt first, eager to get out and maybe, just maybe, shield Kim from the impending blow. But a jolt of shock froze me in place.
